Lawson's CUDA

Postby Natalie » Mon Dec 06, 2010 10:53 am

I came across this article about a badass George Lawson design that came out of the American Motors styling department: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/12/when-is-a-cuda-not-a-cuda-when-its-an-amc/

If you want to skip the reading...here's the rendering:

Very interesting, I have been studying AMC history for decades but had never seen that! This was just a few years before Richard Teague took over as AMC's head of styling.

Gotta love styling illustrations- look at the size of the driver's head and tell me where the rest of his body is.

Slight tangent -- references to Richard Teague’s ideas (Marlin, Tarpon) always pop up in discussions about the design of the Chrysler Crossfire (what I drive). His influence on that design is obvious, but amusing/unexpected, given his “history” with Chrysler. Great designer, and from everything I’ve read about him, he seems like he was a great person.

Maybe you've seen this car online, a friend of mine has made his Crossfire into a modern AMX since the concept and proportions are so similar. People either love it or hate it!

Dick Teague was a great guy, when I was about 10 I joined an auto postcard club and he was also a member. I knew who he was from reading about his car collection, so I wrote him to say "Hi" and asked for an autographed car picture. I didn't know if I would hear back but sure enough I soon received an autographed Pacer brochure which I still have framed. After that we were penpals for a couple of years due to our mutual interests. I regret that I was not able to meet him in person before he passed away.

No, I hadn't seen the "AMX Crossfire"! That's great. I am partial to the original Xfire ribbed hood, but I do love it. Creative and very cool. Thanks for sharing the photo & your Teague story. Good stuff.
