These pictures of Tucker #1030 were taken by my friend, Jim Jordan, in July of 2005 at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Three are posted here and one to follow. Charles D. Barnette

I'm curious about the rear of this Tucker. It appears to be different then others I've seen. I notice it says Torpedo instead of Tucker
on the bumper, has "Tucker" in chrome letters on the deck lid which has some vents on it. I don't see that on pictures of any of Dave
Cammacks cars which were all built before this one or on #1041 which was built after. How many cars had this on the back and which
numbers were they? What does it say after the word Torpedo?

Yes, I am wondering the same thing and I am a "newbie" to the club! If the term "Torpedo" was only used during the initial planning stages of the Tucker, what is it doing on the back of this Tucker? Did someone do some mild customizing to it or was this done at the factory? Someone please speak up! Charles-after the word Torpedo, it looks like (to the untrained eye) it is followed by the Roman numerals "IV".

There is more visual detail on the "see a Tucker page". I am guessing someone added the vents and Torpedo on the bumper. Car #29's tail appears to have Tucker on the bumper and #33's looks to be blank. Many people seem to have added their own touch to a few of these cars over the years. #48 even has a 3rd brake light added.

Torpedo 335 for the Franklin 335 engine. It seems like the bumper is different though.
I thought the word "Tucker" was stamped into the bumpers where this one appears to be flat.

I know the Petersen says this was Preston Tuckers personal car. Did he buy this car at the auction
or own it otherwise for some time? What is the ownership history on this car? I'm sure someone
will know the real story on this one.

Tucker #1030 is quite unique with all of it's added embellishments... Which I believe were added during it's restoration some time in the 1980s.

Besides the hood scoop/louver treatment and "Tucker" lettering on the engine lid and the "Torpedo 335" emblem on the rear bumper, you will also notice modified Tucker crests on the sail panels and stainless garnish moldings around all of the side glass. There are also extra interior dome lights on the inside of both sail panels. I have no idea why any of these items were added, or by whom.

Tucker Fan 48, the word "Tucker" was not stamped into the bumper on any Tucker, the lettering was applied separately. Some cars had red or black raised plastic lettering, others had black lettering in the form of a vinyl sticker/label and several were left blank.

Preston Tucker kept #1030 for himself and #1031 for his wife Vera for some time. If I remember correctly he also sold #1029 to the Rockefeller family around 1955.

I hope that answers some questions.

I remembered the "Tucker" on the bumper being somewhat 3 dimensional but not being lucky enough to have
a Tucker in my garage to look at I thought it might have been stamped. Raised plastic letters make more sense
and also does explain the blank bumper on #1030. I still wonder who added the embelishments.

I was always under the impression that Preston Tucker himself added the chrome surrounding the windows...

If it was truly owned by Preston Tucker and claimed by him as his personal car, wouldn't it make this Tucker the most valuable of all the surviving Tuckers? I notice that on this Tucker are push button inside interior door openers (or it appears to be). Was this standard on all Tuckers?

Yes, the push buttons are standard on all Tuckers... They are the same part used on '47-'48 Willys.

Streamliner,

Do you happen to have any early images of #1030 in your archives? The Indy footage clearly shows the car without embellishments, but it's certainly possible that some of the extras were added after this and prior to PT's death in 1956.

So which car is this? It appears to be simular to #1030 on the back but is a light color. The photo is from the Chicago Sun-Times
and the sign in the upper left of the photo says Antique Auto Museum. Also is there an emblem on the front door of some sort?
Maybe someone knows which car it is and when and where the picture was taken.

That is undoubtedly the same car - 1030. The photo was taken in August 1972 at the Chicago Historical Antique Automobile Museum (a private collection) in Highland Park, IL (now defunct). I do not have my list on me or I could look up who owned it in 1972.

#1030 was originally a black car painted white, then restored to black? This was Preston Tucker's personal car that is now
at the Petersen Museum. Any ideas on when it turned white and who restored it to black? Was it white when Preston owned it?
So the car was being displayed by Chicago Historical Antique Automobile Museum but was owned by someone else? When did
they acquire the car and did they sell it to the Petersen?
