When I click on "1018" to read about the car, the writeup says it was destroyed in 1953. I don't think so -- it ought to be 2 or 3 years earlier. I distinctly remember riding my bike out to see that car just after it was wrecked, and looking through the owner's garage window at that forlorn mess. I turned 16 in 1952 and bought my first car (a '40 Chrysler) that summer. I gave that bike to one of my cousins immediately, so I know I couldn't have ridden it in '53 -- nor would I, as I had a car!

I have no proof, but I really think that wreck occurred in '49 or '50, as the car was in my hometown (Bradford, PA) for a relatively short time before it was wrecked -- and it was brand-new when it got there. Perhaps Mr. David Cammack could help with a date, as he has a photo of the wreck scene (and perhaps a newspaper writeup) in his wonderful Tucker collection in Alexandria. He also has several parts from 1018, including the engine & transmission, heater, and taillights.

Could be; I don't remember where I got the 1953 date from. However I do remember seeing the article at Dave's place and I'll double check the date.

Thanks

I just verified that 1953 is correct.

Some additional information that supports August, 1948 date.

In the November 1998 edition of Tucker Topics there was a meet the member bio on William Adams, TACA #881. The bio says that William "personally witnessed and photographed the accident which destroyed Tucker #1018, when it struck a tree in East Aurora, NY in August 1948. A copy of the photographs and newspaper article are now on file in the Museum in Ypsilanti. William sends the following eyewitness account of the crash-- "Tucker #1018 was not hit by a train as I personally saw it when it hit the tree, and was ripped apart when the tow truck hooked onto it. Fortunately, the two passengers were not hurt. The windshield popped out as it was supposed to." I think this is good evidence of the date (unfortunately, a copy of one of the pictures taken by Mr. Adams that I was given by the late Clair C. Fisher of East Concord, NY is not dated (at that time Mr. Adams was TACA #123).

Larry -- thanks. That jibes more with my memory of when; I knew that the '53 date was too late, for reasons stated above. Since I was so excited when that Tucker first came to town, I knew that it had to be '48, or at latest '49, when it arrived. And it wasn't there for long before it was wrecked (but not before the owner's nephew and I had a ride in it! :D )

My Dad ( William Adams ) was unable to pin an exact date on the accident. I had him check the E.A. papers from the latter half of "48 and he found no references to the wreck. He did find an advertisement that a Tucker was to be on display in East Aurora and we assume that it was most likely this vehicle.
Tom, I have heard that numerous pieces of this car are still out there in the hands of collectors ; I believe all the remains at that time were returned to Bradford PA as frostyra has stated.
I can give you an exact location, Olean Rd. near Blakely, across from the old one room schoolhouse ( that still stands ). If you're interested in chatting with my Dad, stop by 1375 Olean Rd. for a first hand account :)
