Employer and/or Investor Info

How might I find out about the different levels of involvement concerning the Investors. It is my understanding that there was a distinction between owning a distributorship and dealorship. I constue that a distributor was an investor and an employee of sorts who sold dealorships, and the distributor purchased the rights to a geographical territory. I would very much like to know whether there is an archive/resource that would shed some light on this subject, i.e., distributors, dealors, names, territories, legal involvement (trickle down), etc.
