Postby goneflyin » Wed Nov 17, 2010 9:52 am

Hi folks,

We're looking for some bits to get #1046 more complete, she's coming along well.
I'd really appreciate anyone's call that has parts or recommendations of who to contact.

---front and rear shocks
---stainless radio head cover (see pic)
---speaker and vent grilles (see pic)
---lower dash stainless small trim (see pic)
---air cleaner
---radiator fan (pusher)
---mufflers and tailpipes
---front seat adjuster risers
---horn button

Many thanks in advance...

Don,

That's a tough list. Richard Jones is the expert on much of that.
Martyn would also know a lot of the answers. I've read the rear
shocks were Monroe 3076 or Monroe load leveler LL563. I think
Bill Hamlin had made some modifcations with shocks that did
improve ride and handling.

Are you using the Torsilastic suspension that was original to
the car? There was a company that had the molds to make them.

I think it used a Stromberg carburator. It's possible the air cleaner
was used on other cars. Many Tucker parts were. It was an oil
bath air cleaner.

Can you tell us what engine number you are putting into #1046?
The engine number is near the back of the block just to the right
of where the distributor goes into the block. It should be five numbers
starting with 335. The original motor was #33553. I don't know where
that motor went after 1991. I'm sure it's around.

The radiators were made by Young Radiator in Racine WI but I don't
have anything on the fan other than it was a 6 blade aluminum.

The horn button you just missed a few on ebay in the past
couple months. You might track down the buyer. Someone also
bought the mold to make them of ebay recently.

It looks like you might be off to the fabrication dept for some of
these items. I'll see if I can find any more information. Let me know if
I can be of any help.

I know you guys don't like to let pictures out but I'm sure everyone
here would love to see how the car is looking.

I'm not Richard Jones, but if you're not in a rush, then I'll be able to help you with some of the information once I get a chance to find my notes. Richard, of course, could probably answer all your questions off the top of his head.

The stainless parts occasionally surface on eBay, so you might want to keep your eyes peeled there.

Don,

Take a look at a 1948 Buick fireball air cleaner. They may be the same through 1952
and could have been used on Cadillacs as well. I believe they are the same or very close.
The end or middle section might have been modified depending on which one you find
but you guys are good at that. If it works you owe me a ride !

Guys, thanks for the excellent replies.
It also will be great to hear from Richard and Martyn.
In the meantime, some info on #46:
It has engine #33555, and the torsilastic suspension is there (with parts from Mark L.)
The frame repairs are done and it's sitting on its wheels. The owner is bringing the car back to its original maroon. A lot of the original paint was still on the lower pans.
The fan is a tough problem as it was designed with reversed pitch blades.
It will be great to have it back on the road (in 2011)
Our Tucker man here Gary also noted that we missed the horn button on ebay...
TF48, we're not stingie with rides, stop in here sometime.
Pic of the car last month attached.
Thanks
Don

Don,

The car looks great. Hopefully you can have it done before the Tucker convention in June of 2011. They are hoping to get a record number of Tuckers together in LA. It would be nice to see #1046 there.

Thanks for the picture. Keep us informed on your progress and if we can do anything else to help!

Looking good. Really good.

Where did you get the suspension components? On the Tucker Wikipedia site there is a picture of the front suspension that it says came out of 1046 for the V8 conversion.

How much of the frame had to be recreated?

I hope you have lot's of before, during and after pictures that you would be willing to share.

Nice to see that car being brought back to it former glory.

The entire frame of #1046 was recreated by scanning the frame of Tucker #1047 (Gilmore Car Museum, home of the TACA' Tucker Historical Collection and Library). They have recreated it to the smallest detail - amazing!

Thanks for the photos and the updates.

Hi Jay,
Well, almost! Actually the main part of the frame, that includes the sills is still original in the car and has not been disturbed. It was the frame sections forward of the firewall and rearward of the back seats that had to be replaced as it had been torched out for the Lincoln chassis.
Cicero, what we couldn't find of the suspension, we had to make here, like most of the rear suspension. That's some big chunk of steel for the rear swing arms!
