Maryland Theater Invokes Tucker in Attempt to Save Business

He feels squashed by the mega chains and says Tucker: The Man and His Dream is one of his favorite movies:
A formal fundraiser is being considered for Feb. 20 at the Senator, 5904 York Road. He said donors can pay any amount they want to see the 1988 movie "Tucker -- The Man and His Dream," about the maverick Preston Tucker, who built a different kind of car, the Tucker Torpedo, in 1948, but was crushed by the auto industry when he tried to mass-produce it.

Why that movie?

"Why do you think?" asked Kiefaber, who called it one of his favorite films. He said he sees certain parallels in his struggle as an independent, single-screen theater owner trying to compete with corporately owned multiplexes. He has spent years fighting a policy called "film clearance," in which theaters make deals with distributors to block competing theaters from showing first-run films concurrently.

How could I miss this?

Shucks, I missed it! I live pretty close to the Senator and love it! As a DC/Baltimore area actor I had of course heard of the troubles that the Senator was having lately. If only I had known! In fact I have done background work in films that premiered there or used it as a location. And I figured the owner was a Tucker enthusiast as the movie poster is up in the men's room lounge. I here that the Senator successfully raised the needed money, so next there's a one-night engagement like this, I'll be in the front row!
