In watching the movie, there is references made to using torque convertors on each wheel, instead of a transmission. How would this work? How would different gear ratios (including reverse) be produced?
Just curious...That has been bugging me every time I watch this movie.
It was one of those things that worked in theory but not in reality. His beloved monster sized 589 Engine built to drive the torque convertors was also a bust and both were eventually replaced with converted helicopter engines and old refurbished cord transmissions. Many parts on the Tucker were pilfered from other cars of the time to get the initial test production cars built. Most of those parts including the transmission would have eventually been replaced with Tucker designed and manufactured parts had the company survived long enought to achieve mass production. As an aside to the movie I understand that he only brought 8 cars to the court house for the fruad trial. The story goes that the last fourteen cars were assembled but were not fitted with engines and transmissions and were auctioned off in that condition along with the completed Tuckers in 1950

It was planned to use twin hydraulic torque converters,
one driving each rear wheel. There was to be no reverse
gear, but the blades within the torque converters would
would swing far enough to reverse the fluid flow, causing
the vehicle to back up. This never worked.

Also a patent was granted for a twin transmission design
which used two fluid couplings along with 2 gears forward
and one reverse gear.

Neither of these two designs were put into production.

the cord tranny was used in the tin goose. with the 589 flat 6. all others had the tucker designed Y1 transmition bell helicopter engine was used as a model due to its small size. the TUCKER corporation designed their own version for the polot production cars so just to clear things up the the tin goose was the only one that used some parts from other cars.
