Is it a vent for interior air?

The rear quarter panel grills allow air into the engine compartment to cool the engine. Also on the first 25 cars, the fuel filler tube and gas cap were inside the left grille. On later cars, those from Serial Number 26 (1026) and up the fuel tank was relocated and the filler tube and cap are mounted in the left front fender. Left side being the drivers side of the car.
