Columbus, Indiana indeed! "Clessie" Cummins is almost as fascinating a character as Preston Tucker. He was a self-taught inventor/engineer who started out as a chauffuer for the richest family in town. He was tinkering with engines in the family's garage and ended up perfecting the diesel engine for transportation/trucking purposes. The Irwin family started Cummin Engine with Clessie Cummins as a partner but they ended up with all the money as Clessie sold out his interests in the 40's before the comany started making big profits. As the company grew, Clessie was never happy in his executive office and would usually be found down on the factory floor tinkering with one thing or another. He lived out the rest of his life in California, always with a worksop close by that he was in practically every day right up to his death. Among his later inventions was the "Jake Brake" which is in most trucks on the road today.
The architecture in Columbus was the result of J. Irwin Miller, a member of the Irwin family who led Cummins and Irwin banking through their most profitable years. His Cummins Foundation which he established paid the architects fees for schools and public buildings for many years and led to other very unique public/private partnerships.
