Tucker Torpedo

Postby stephanie » Wed May 15, 2002 5:39 am

The information given about the Tucker Automobile not being called the "Torpedo is incorrect. The pre-production prototype was called the tucker `48 after the first year of proposed production. The name finalized on the Tucker Torpedo although after Tucker ran into his own torgpedo with the Big 3 Automakers, detractors referred to the car as "The Tin Goose".
I suggest you download the search engine manager at w.copernic.com and you'll find loads of webpages on the Tucker, most notably, The Tucker Club of America. It was and still is a fine car with features that many car companies didn't put into production until the 1980's and 90's. 4 wheel disc brakes, padded dashboard, fuel injection, collapsable bumpers and it even featured interchangable front and rear seats to "manage" upholstery wear. Tuckers were distinctive for their "cyclops" third center headlight that turned in the direction that the front wheel turned. Out of 51 original production models turned off the assembly line, 46 of them are still road worthy. The original Tucker was supposed to retail for $2,460. If you can find one for sale now it would go for between $250,000 and $500,000. The last Tucker sold was an auction in 1996 and the car sold for $465,000.
