Tucker #1045

What a day!!! Met Dan Gurney at the Monterey Historics (now the "Reunion"), and spent the evening looking over some rather decent (understatement) cars.

As for #1045, the car actually looked pretty awesome, despite a few small blemishes. To my untrained eye, it seemed very well cared for. The paint actually appeared very presentable and the much-discussed door alignment really didn't look all that bad, but I don't know what it would take to straighten it out. There looked to be a fresh ding on the left rear fender. The engine needed a little ether to get it going and it sounded just a little rough to start, but hey, who doesn't? Although not perfect, it's a car anyone would be proud to own...

I met the owner of #1015 who was also going over the car and we had a great, allbeit too short, discussion on all things Tucker. Hopefully, he ended up with it, but it no doubt ended up in the hands of a Tucker fan. Also, one of the RM guys who let me in for some photos (I wasn't bidding) was very familiar with the Tucker in Sacramento (unknown number) that I think eventually sold to Brad (volks1500).

There are a lot of Tucker fans out there, as passers-by would see the car and say "Ooohhh! There's a Tucker!".

However the bright spot is that Tucker #1045 has shown how well a Tucker is now respected on the world stage! It certainly took the spotlight off of the "Tucker convertible" and put it where it ought to be. She is the new star for Tucker, and it was done by a Tucker formerly owned by Nick Jenin! I am sure Mr. Tucker, Mr. Jenin, and Mr. O'Quinn are doing cartwheels in heaven over the results of this auction. The Tucker looked absolutely gorgeous on my computer as she went across the auction block! She literally blew away the exotic and expensive automobiles (foreign and domestic) that preceded her during the auction. The Tucker has certainly, consistantly arrived since Jenin amassed his collection of them. Remember Tucker #1046 is waiting in the RM wings to appear to make its mark as well! Charles D. Barnette

It's official that Tucker #1045 set a new world record for the highest amount ever paid for a Tucker as reported by The Canadian Automotive Network. Remember RM Auctions is based out of Canada. See the article on the net entitled "RM Auctions Sets New World Record With A 1948 Tucker in Monterey!" at this link: http://www.auto123.com/en/news/car-news ... ith-a-19... What an historical moment for a Tucker. Charles D. Barnette-sorry the link does not want to work! It goes on to say the amount was nearly double the pre-sale estimate. However no information about the new owner has been released yet.

She is now covered in an Old Cars Weekly article. She truly has become the "Poster Child" for the Tucker automobile. Charles

I think we still have to keep this sale in perspective. #1045 is far from a million dollar car even though it sold for that. The price was the product of two buyers both wanting to own a car that is scarce. As I've told others, if there had been two Tuckers there for sale, or one less buyer, this car would have topped out at 700-750 because there was nobody else bidding. The car is not anywhere near the quality of #1017, #1038, #1043, and few others. Up close it was rough. It was a 20 year old restoration that was nowhere near what we see done today. From 25 feet away it looked pretty but to make it nice you'd spend $200,000+.

It'll be interesting to see what price the next car sells at. We could see a better car even sell for less if there arn't enough determined buyers there to drive the price up.

I have learned today from a reliable source that the buyer of 1045 at the recent RM auction was from the West Coast and that the car remains in the United States. Charles D. Barnette

Nope. He's in Australia. In fact, he's already registered for this site. Perhaps he had an agent in SoCal and the car hasn't shipped yet.

It should be in Australia by now. I'm pretty sure I saw it sail by my window a couple weeks ago.

I am glad to know that the new owner has registered on this site. Congratulations on your purchase, and I would hope that you would become an active participant in this forum. Charles-I may have to come to Australia someday and see 1045 and meet Olivia Newton-John.

Nice job with the photoshop!

I'm guessing she'd have better taste in cars than that one.
