Automotive Trivia Quizzes

Postby Tuckerfan1053 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:47 am

Inspired by Tuckeroo's trivia question in this thread: http://tuckerclub.org/bbs3/viewtopic.ph ... 7810#p7810 I thought I'd start a trivia quiz thread, so we can show everyone how smart we think ( ) we are!

Tuckeroo's question was: "In what year did each of the Big Three automobile manufacturers have five (and only five) automobile brands apiece (excludes truck-only and non-U.S. brands). To show your work, name the 15 brands.

I can't answer that, but I can toss this one into the mix: What is the only model name to be used not only by all of the Big Three, but was also used by them at the same time! I'll give you one hint, if no one comes up with the answer in a week's time.

This is a great idea!

Now as to your question:

"What is the only model name to be used not only by all of the Big Three, but was also used by them at the same time! I'll give you one hint, if no one comes up with the answer in a week's time."

My first guess is variations on "Deluxe." I believe Ford started using it in 1938 (De Luxe) through 1940 (after which it may just have been a trim, not model name), Dodge in 1940 (the D-14 Deluxe), Pontiac in 1940 (DeLuxe), and Chevrolet in 1941...I believe therefore there must have been a year or more where they overlapped, so I would guess 1940 (excluding Chevrolet but Pontiac should have GM covered)

Suburban?

First question, 1958?

1. Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Edsel, Continental.

2. Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Cadillac.

3. Dodge, Desoto, Chrysler, Plymouth, Imperial.

Nope. Not "Deluxe" and I'll say that its not a case where they used variations of spelling for the name, all of them had the exact same spelling.

1958 is correct! As are all of the brand names. The ones people tend to struggle with are Edsel (which was a separate division from Ford, 1958-1960), Continental which did not have a Lincoln badge from 1956-1958, and Imperial. Well done!

If you include international divisions...could it be "Ranger"? It was a trim line of the Ford F-1 from the late 60s, a mid-70s version of the Valiant (Austrailia), and a GM car (in South Africa) about that time... :?:

Nope. All three models were sold in the US with the exact same name at the same time.

Nope. It was the Ford _______, Chrysler _______, Chevrolet ________ (it might not have been those particular divisions of the Big Three, but it was that name pattern, so the word was the primary model name and not a prefix or suffix to any other name).

Ford, Chrysler, and Buick all made models called "Victoria," circa 1932.

That's not the name I'm thinking of, so I don't know if there's actually two models with the same name produced by all car makers or if the dates on the Victorias you mention are a bit off.

1927, "Imperial":

1927 Lincoln Imperial Victoria

1927 Cadillac Imperial Fleetwood

1927 Chrysler Imperial

Nope. Actually, I missed it, but Randy Earle had it in the 3rd post. Its Suburban. The Chevy Suburban is still around, but Plymouth made a Suburban stationwagon, and Ford had at least a delivery truck (I think they also had a sedan called a Suburban, but googling "Ford Suburban" turns up mostly erroneous references to Ford Excursions and Expeditions) and a reference to the delivery truck.

And they told me I was a "Fountain of Misinformation" LOL! I'm a 2nd generation car nut, I remember riding in my Dad's chopped '51 Merc with the dual Appletons, Hollywood Exhaust, and his Cal Custom Wolf Whistle..... (whooo! that was over 50 years ago!)

...that's two for two for Randy then! Though I can't help but feel the second question may have had more than one correct (or correctish) answer but all of the correctish answers I guess Randy's was the correctest.

Okay, what was Chrysler's six-division year and what were the divisions?
