I found this part particularly interesting:
Halberstam noted that all GM dealers in Michigan were required to donate one dollar to the Republican Party for every car they sold. The guy who cooked up this scheme, Arthur Summerfeld, was rewarded with a position in Eisenhower’s Cabinet.
No idea if its accurate or not.
