My husband is an over the road driver and has found one. The condition is dire. Dented roof, back window is out, back seat is missing, rusted out floor boards, and no engine. It's been sitting in an unmowed yard probably for years. He did talk to the owner and they want $10,000. All comments welcome.

Could this be the missing Tucker #1042 that dissapeared many moons ago?

Probably a Studebaker, but photos would help. What is the location?

Definitely a Tucker. Next time he's in the area, he'll get some photos. Any idea of the value in this condition?

Found one what? Is it possible that your husband will never again travel this route and that no pictures are forthcoming? For years we have heard of people locating a Tucker only to find it is a Studebaker or a Kaiser or some other vehicle. Seldome do we get proof that what the writer is saying is proven. And over the past 50 years we have heard some really strange tales about locating Tucker's.
I only hope this person will submit proof however my thought is that this is someone who just wants to get attention and we may never hear from them again.
Value

In the early 1970s, Carlo DeLorenzo bought Tucker 1051, which had never been assembled for $20K. Given that a candy bar which cost a quarter in the 1970s now costs you seventy five cents, and that restored Tuckers sell for close to half a million at auction, if your husband has found a Tucker in rough shape (and I've seen the engines go for $7K on eBay), then $10K for the car is the best bargain you'll ever see.

Some of you may remember an article in Collectible Automobile magazine back in 1985 featuring the Tucker, with great photos of #'s 1005, 1012, 1019, 1040 and 1041(also on the cover), an interview with Alex Tremulis, etc. Also included is a small photograph of what appears to be no more than a body shell with dented roof, rusty rocker panels and no doors, fenders or glass. Could this be the one you found? Comments, anyone? Martyn.

Ken,
You said that you heard of there being unfinished shells? Where did you hear this from? I would like to know because another member had told me that they all rotted away in Indiana. However, Alex Tremulis was once quoted as saying that there was 16 uncompleted Tuckers still on the assembly line. Do you know where theses shells are? And what shape are they in? Please tell me everything that you know about this.
Found one

In an attempt to clarify this situation of Tucker's and the bodies, I offer the following information.
There are records that show that Tucker built a total of 57 bodies prior to shut down. At shut down 37 vehicles were complete. Some employees continued work with out pay and completed several more until they ran out of parts. Tucker serial no. 1048 had no transmission and 1049 and 1050 were sold as incomplete cars at the auction. This leaves bodies 51 thru 57 and they were sold "as is." The Poll Museum purchased body 54and used some parts from the wrecked 1027 to try to build a car. They later gave up and sold it to Carlos DeLorenzo. He finished it up using fibre glass parts. Stan Gilliland found bodies 51,52,53, 55,56 and 57 in a field in Ill. in the 70's while we were attempting to locate all of the Tucker's. He brought body 55 to his shop in Kansas and it has later been sold. These were bodies only. No doors, hoods, fenders or trunk lids. they sat out in the open field for some 20 + years and were in very bad shape. Alex told me he was working with body 57 to reshape it into a 49 Tucker. Main difference was to be a change in shape of the small rear windows. (Opra? windows). Something that adds to the confusion is that the body and serial numbers do not match on all Tucker's. My Serial number 1023 had body 8. I am convinced that all of the original Tucker's have been accounted for by the members of TACA back in the 1970's and this constant "Found One" holds no merit. People have found Tucker's and they end up being anything from Edsels, Ramblers, Studebakers and Fords. Just wonder why we have had no reply from the lady whose husband "found one." There definitely were not enough parts left when the plant closed to build a complete Tucker. There were hundreds of brake drums and there was some sheet metal that was sold at the auction but nothing close to anything needed to build a Tucker.
Thank you plancor for your detailed post. Obviously these are the bodys I had heard rumors about. I am kind of a long time Tucker enthusiast but had let my interest in the marque lie idle for many years. I recently found this site & I am amazed at the information on Tucker now available on-line.

Ken,
Thanks for the reply. At least I know someone is reading my replies. Might add that Alex told me that they were also working on the front end sheet metal to get rid of that deep pocket between the headlights and the trunk (on the Tucker the trunk is in the front of the car) as it was a nightmare to the painters who had an almost impossible task of getting paint into the area. Many of the cars do have body numbers that match the serial numbers. The body number was stamped into the firewall next to where the data plate was attatched. It was only one or two numbers but when it was put stamped onto the data plate it the number was preceeded by 10 the same as the serial number. So on the data plate Tucker Serial Number 1023 was the 23rd. Tucker built and the data plate said it had Body Number 1008.Only the number 8 was stamped into the firewall.
