Just a question

Postby stolenhalo » Sun May 31, 2009 5:40 pm

I'm new here and can not find any other information online. But I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if the Tucker 48 is 100% american made, and also where can I find that proof.

Any ideas would be very helpful thank you !

As far as I know, all Tucker '48s were built entirely of American-made parts.
Sure, many of the component parts were obtained from other manufacturers due to the rush to production, but these manufacturers were American.
Lincoln supplied steering wheels, Kaiser supplied door handles, and perhaps others supplied parts as well.

It would be safe to say the Tucker was "All American" . Remember this was immediately after WW2 and we were not importing items like today. Tucker used parts from companies that supplied the Big Three with parts. He used Bendix brake drums, Auto-Lite ignition parts and Firestone or other rubber companies made the rubber for the suspensions. Tubless tires were also "American Made". Doubt anything on a Tucker could have been labled "foreign made".

Indeed, much of the rest of the world was trying to rebuild from the devistation caused by WWII. Germany's car production was (temporarily) capped at 1936 levels, so any industry there would have been unlikely to make components for US companies. I don't know if Japan was under similar caps, but Toyota was in such rough shape in the years following the war that they were paying their employees in bread.

Tucker supposedly had everything he needed to build cars in Brazil, with the Carioca, but was extremely reluctant to build cars which weren't American. I doubt if Tucker would have been willing to use foreign made parts, even if they'd been available. (Given the incredible unreliability of electrical parts made by Lucas of England, I have a hard time believing that someone as obsessed with safety as Tucker was, would have wanted to use their parts.)
