William B. Hamlin Car

Postby Tucker Fan 48 » Tue May 26, 2009 4:29 am

Which car owned by William B. Hamlin was used in the February 1971 Mechanix Illustrated road test by Tom McCahill?
It appears Hamlin owned #1002, #1014, and #1037 but also was involved in the first restoration of #1038 which occured around 1971.
I've also seen mention that he was involved in the restoration of #1009 and that Bill Goodwin owned both #1009 and #1038.

Also any ideas on which car McCahill used for his original road test back in 1948?

I believe it was #1014, but I don't actually have a copy of that article, I just remember getting that impression when I read it and saw the photos.

I found my February 1971 copy of Mechanix Illustrated and it was #1014, which had California black plate HKE228.
McCahill said Hamlin had #1002 there but it needed paint and would not be finished for a couple weeks so he used
#1014.

I'm still curious if anyone knows which car McCahill used for his original road test back in 1948? He said Preston
made 6 Tuckers available to him and that he did test all 6 to see if they would back up but that the car he used
on the road test was blue like #1014. That leaves us with #1002, #1010, #1024, #1027, #1031, #1037, #1043,
#1047, #1049, #1051, or #1014 itself. Any ideas????

The car Tom McCahill tested for the August 1948 issue of Mechanix Illustrated was #1002... It can be seen in other promotional material of the period, at the forefront of the assembly line, and was frequently photographed for original issues of "Tucker Topics". These early photos of #1002 show the car wearing black tires, but it wore a fresh set of whitewalls by the time McCahill drove it. #1002 was returned to the factory several times to receive updates as pilot production progressed.
I hope that answers your question!
