Say, Didja Know That the Prosecutor at Tucker's Trial

Postby Tuckerfan1053 » Fri May 01, 2009 10:45 pm

Was later found guilty of taking bribes? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Kerner,_Jr.

Following a 1973 trial in which his prosecutor was future Illinois governor James R. Thompson, Kerner was convicted on 17 counts of bribery, conspiracy, perjury, and related charges.[1] He was sentenced to three years in federal prison in Chicago and fined $50,000. Faced with almost certain impeachment, he resigned his position on the federal bench on July 22, 1974. Kerner was released early from prison when it was determined that he was suffering from terminal cancer.

Yes, that is an interesting sideline to the Tucker saga. I have several vintage articles relating to that event in my files.

I seem to remember this article on Cammack's wall as well. The whole story has had a boomerang effect. Tucker's prosecutor, Kerner, got in trouble, then in recent years Kerner's prosecutor got into trouble as well.

Supposedly, the reason Kerner got busted was that someone listed the bribes they paid him on their taxes as a "business expense" (bribes apparently being par for the course for getting things done in Chicago).
