"Phil Egan sketches"

Postby dleeper242 » Sun Feb 01, 2009 1:27 pm

I don't wish to take anything away from Phil Egan. However the lower four "sketches" on page 4 of the current issue (Jan. 2009 volume 37, issue 01) are not by Mr. Egan. These four views were taken from the poster that i created. The artist for these sketches was Mr. John Carr and the project was done while he and I were in the U.S. Air Force and stationed at Eglin AFB in Florida. My part of this project was to provide photos and and other information in order to make the drawings as accurate as possible. Given that each of these cars were essentially prototypes, there was a fair amount of variation in the available information. If you want to question this I have the originals. The four views were are on individual pieces of drawing paper, which are getting pretty brittle and yellow, the work having been done around 1950.
To create the poster i mounted these drawings on a large piece of drawing paper and i added some text giving some information about the car and its history. I made a couple of mistakes in the text and Brent Norris wrote me and gave me the correct information. He should be able to document what i'm telling you. I think i still have his letters filed in my TUCKER file.
Tucker Topics has been using these drawings in various way for some years now, never giving any credit to the source of this information. I haven't complained about this because i didn't think it harmed anything. However now you are giving credit for this work to the wrong person. This I think is unfair and probably illegal. I would appreciate that you publish a correction.
Thank you

tO Hampton Wayt If you are the "Tucker Historian" you should already have a copy on the Poster in in your files. In the Tucker Topics they have been using parts of the poster in backgrounds for the last several years so I know they have a copy. In fact I think I gave them a copy.
When I get a chance I'll try to get a reasonable photo of one of the parts (the poster was made from the original four views drawn by John Carr). However, right now I'm recovering from eye surgery and trying to do my income tax. The latter has been made difficult because of the way my brokerage house reported my stock sales. I have spent two days making their numbers agree with my records! Taking those dry pieces of paper out of their tube and getting them to lay flat may prove delicate and I don't want to try to rush it.
BTW my name is Leeper, not Lepper.

Mr. Leeper -

First, my apology to you. As Editor of Tucker Topics, the sketches were passed on to me without any accredation as to the artist. In looking over the January, 2009 Tucker Topics I do not find that any representation was made as to the source of the drawings -- they were not credited to Mr. Egan. I will check with Mr. Morris (not Norris) and if he verifies your statements, I will make sure to publish a correction as you have requested: artist John Carr. Until then, the drawings will be suspended from use by TACA.

Please note that Hampton Wayt is NOT the TACA Historian: that honor belongs to Mr. Martyn Donaldson who has held that post for several years. Mr. Wyat has no official capacity with The Tucker Automobile Club of America, Inc.

If I can be of any further service, please let me know at your earliest convenience.

And Mr. Richard Jones is the Senior Historian and a founding member of the Tucker Automobile Club of America. Although I must commend Mr. Wayt and Mr. Clark for their extensive research in recent years, if it were not for Mr. Jones initial research during the 1960s and '70s, we would not have half the information we take for granted today.

Martyn is absolutely correct about Richard Jones. There are a number of the original founders or early members of TACA who were/are very knowledgeable about Tucker matters, including being able to actually effectively work on Tucker cars. Bill Hamlin was incredibly knowledgeable and was involved in the restoration of a number of Tucker cars, including two of his Tucker cars, 1002 and 1014. No one provides a better overview of the Tucker story than Dave Cammack- especially if he is telling you while you walk around looking at his fantastic Tucker collection. There were/are others. However, the ultimate source of Tucker knowledge, including how to fix Tucker cars, beginning with his stint as the first Tucker Topics Editor, continues to be Richard Jones. This past fall I had the opportunity to spend a Friday with Dave and Richard at Dave's collection in Virginia. If you love things Tucker, nothing beats sitting and listening to Dave and Richard talk about the Tucker story surrounded by Dave's collection. My wife jokingly told people that I spent that week-end at the equivalent of Disney World for Tucker crazies. How true.

Nor have I claimed such a title. Thanks, Hampton
