Tucker 589 engine?

Postby elsquared » Wed Nov 03, 2004 5:52 am

Hi all - I would like to learn more about Tucker's original engine, the 589. Can anyone lead me to some good source info, maybe some newspaper/magazine articles? Thanks very much.<br>

The two best sources for information on the engine are going to be "The Indomitable Tin Goose" (which is out of print, but copies occassionally show up on eBay) and the Tucker manual that TACA sells. <p></p><i></i>

589 engine

The May 1957 issue of Speed Age magazine has the most information
I have ever seen about the A-589 Tucker engine. I bought one of
these magazines off a newstand in 1957 and found another one on
ebay, so it you are patient, you might also find one.

The Oct-Nov 1947 issue of Science and Mechanics magazine (one issue)
has two pictures and one drawing of the A-589 engine. The article also
has information about the disc brakes, the ignition system and the
suspension system. This magazine is difficult to find but I found one on
ebay, so it is possible to obtain it.

The September 1947 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine has a picture
of the complete car and a picture of the chassis with the A-589 engine
on page 136. On page 137 is another picture of the A-589 engine and
three drawings of the engine appear on page 138. I found this and other
magazines on ebay.

tucker48fan states that these show up on e-bay, "The two best sources for information on the engine are going to be "The Indomitable Tin Goose" (which is out of print, but copies occassionally show up on eBay) and the Tucker manual that TACA sells."

But if you type in the name of the book in a Google search you will be able to find this book very easily. Amazon.com lists 19 in conditions from Used (acceptable, good, very good) to New Copies, and the prices are reasonable.

The '57 Speed Age article has a Q&A interview with Ben Parsons, the lead designer of the 589.

In one answer he states "150" 589 engines were built. This quantity surprises me greatly.

How many 589s (majorly complete) are known to exist... or thought to exist today????

Dave Camack has 2 I believe, he has one on a Tucker "test" frame and another one that I think is a cut away on a stand. He also has about 7-8 franklins both air cooled prototype and water cooled early and production engines on stands.

Is the 'Tin Goose' still running it's 589 or has it been changed over to a 335?
