column shift question

Postby dbengo » Mon Apr 07, 2008 10:58 am

Hello Everyone ,
I;m the lucky caretaker of body number 36
I'm looking for knowledge of what is inside the column shift before I take it apart. It takes forever to shift the car. It seems like there is some worn contacts or something or could it be vacumn problem. If I need some parts any suggestions where I might locate them. Any help will be greatly appreciated. :)

I have the blueprints on the Tucker shift and transmision. How it is put together and how to solve the electrical problems in the shift switch. Your problem is more likely in the transmision. Send me your email and I will send you all you need to know to get her running like new.

Tucker Transmission

Postby plancor 792 » Mon Apr 07, 2008 1:23 pm

If my information is correct you have a Y-1 transmission in 1036. However it works the same as a Cord transmission and I would suspect the problem is a lack of vacuum or low voltage to the solenoids. It is possible that the problem is in the shift selector but I doubt it. Having worked on several of the Tuckers with transmission problems I would look first for vacuum leaks, low voltage and then a corroded electrical connection. As this vehicle has been indoors I doubt the electrical contacts are corroded. But you can check the cable that runs from the selector to the transmission approximately half way back under the car is a connection so make sure it is clean and check all connections at the transmission. Hard troubleshooting something in California when I am in Florida. I would not suggest your taking the shift unit on the steering colum apart as it is possible to put it together wrong. Please send me an email at Tuckermch@bellsouth.net and I may be able to give you more information.

Thanks for the information. Even though I think I know all there is to know about the Cord and the Y-1 transmission its always good to read how others attack certain problems.
Thanks,
Richard
