Carioca Replica ??

Postby GalaxieJoe » Mon Oct 20, 2003 9:05 am

First I will start by saying Hi and to say in posting this I don't want to start any trouble just to post an idea. A few days ago I found my old set of drawings, ideas and a 1/24 mock-up of how to base a replica of the Carioca onto a VW karmann Ghia. The Idea went: 1) To cut the frame and add a few inches to the front and rear to give the car a longer wheelbase. 2) front and rear tracks would be made wider to clear the body(8-10 inches). A second idea for the front would be to bolt on a a chrome I-Beam Ford Axel like found on a Hot Rod. 3) To get the basic shape of the car I thought I would buy 2 fiberglass hoods and both front fenders from Chick. A steel frame would be welded up to bond the fiberglass to the car. 4) The fenders could be based on modified 26-27 Ford Sedan & Touring rear fenders or something like that. 5) The rest of the body could be modified using Using Fiberglass/Foam Sandwich Composite. 6) trim and the odds and ends could be found in most Hot Rod mags or made. This was my great idea which was misplaced for many years, the one reason I am posting this is may be some one will see it and bring it to realilty. since i had this idea I grew and there is no way my 6 foot 5inch frame is going to fit into a type 1 Karmann Ghia, or any type 1 VW. Or if any one know of a car that i could fit into that has a carioca style roof line let me know and i might take on this project once again.
Someone builds a replica of the Plymouth Prowler that's larger than the original and would probably work. I don't remember who it is, but if you dig around on some kit car websites or look through some magazines dedicated to kitcars, you could probably find out who's building them with no problems.

A "Prolwer" replica named Growler.

Postby MrGrowler » Wed Feb 18, 2004 6:20 am

Hi there.
I saw a little deiscussion about the Prowler kit cars. Theres actually a kitcar named "Growler" which is almost an exact kit of the original "Prolwer" car.

I own the Grolwer KitCar and must say it is really fantastic. I spent a total of 16,000$ to put it together.

The original kit is ok, but theres alot you should do to the car. Just to name one, the front fenders are quite an eyesore. (Admitingly, there ok, but overall they look cheap.) I went and bought the original fenders from a wrecked prowler (amongst other things I bought like seats and alot of interior for use on my replica) for about 2,300$

Once you've done the "finishing touches" the car looks just as good as the original. My car is unique, because it contains alot of original parts. (Mostly interior and front and rear bumpers.)

I also own a 1933 Ford SpeedStar Roadster Kitcar which looks almost exactly like the prowler. (But this is from the 30's.) Actually the Prowler is a new version of the old Ford. (Neat.) It has a fiberglass body painted black and very tinted windows. V6 4.0liter engine and performance parts. I spent a total of 18,600$ on this kit. Leather interior and unique interors like "digital" analog dials. (LCD's which are made to look like analog.) Custom made for 1,500$ I also have a small 8inch lcd TV screen in the center. (Used for my "backingup" camera and for my DVD player.)

Hope you enjoyed my post. Go take a look at google.com pictures option and type in "Growler Kitcar" for the growler kits. The Speedstar is a custom, which I doubt is available. But good luck!
