family cars????

Postby MAINEIAX » Fri Jan 30, 2004 10:25 am

hi I have about a million questions on the tucker, I am fascinated with the history of it all. first did the tucker family just walk away from it all or did thay keep or buy a car back to keep or do any of the kids or grand kids have one now?
I have read that Preston had about 20 million and after 51 cars the co. had less than 1/4 million at that time 20mill. was like 100mill. where did all that money go?
on the list of tuckers and where thay are it seems that alot are not accounted for? I have read about the 4 (train, fire, vandalized, test car crash) is there any unaccounted for that someone could find one day??????? thats all for now thank in advance and this is awesome to be able to ask, talk, and learn about Tuckers[/i][/i][/i].

About the original Tucker cars/those left

Postby Larry Clark » Sun Feb 01, 2004 10:18 am

There was the Tin Goose and 50 of the Tucker '48 models. You are correct about the number that were destroyed/no longer exist. The remaining cars are all accounted for- there are none out there somewhere in a barn just waiting to be found. (The TACA web page listing of the location of cars is not complete, in part because some owners do not wish to be identified.)

To my knowledge, no child or grandchild of Preston Tucker has ever owned one of the remaining cars.
As to the company's financing, even if your estimate of present day value of money is in the ballpark, it does not matter as $24- $26 million was way short of need (Henry Kaiser supposedly put in over $50 million and said that he had no idea this amount of money would have the effect of throwing a small rock into a pond in creating waves). Incidentally, the company was worth more than your figure when it went into bankruptcy but had lost the ability to pay its debts as they came due- the very test of bankruptcy.
